A place in the world (and a space in L’H)

With both hands
raised up to the moon,
we open a window
in this closed sky”
Eight of March | Maria Mercè Marçal

Plàudite Teatre – Performing Arts Centre was founded in 1998 in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, as a theatre school and company that evolved with experience, towards a Community and Social Theatre. Amidst the densest city in Europe, we need to refurbish and equip a 260m2 industrial space where we have relocated. The broad and multifunctional premises will become a space for culture and performing arts open to the community. It is a shared space that will shed the spotlight on structural violence, sexism, chronic discrimination and social exclusion: it will open doors for encounters, co-creation, rehearsal, training, exchange as well as the future. We aim to raise the curtain next September to continue to carry out, among other projects, #ACTFEM, which is Plàudite’s response to the most vulnerable young women’s school dropout rate in L’Hospitalet, which is close to 40%.

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”

Virginia Woolf

Thanks to the solidarity received until July 15, we have been able to turn the first spotlight on!

With the amount raised so far, we can install spotlights, put sound-absorbing panels and hang the stage curtains in part of the space, in order to open doors this September and start the first activities. However, in these dark times, we need to turn on more lights, to brighten the community’ future in a transformative and eco-feminist way, in a place in the world where we safeguard, without censorship, the development of critical thinking and inclusion through community and social theatre.

We have decided to leave this DONATION channel OPEN until December 10 to provide the opportunity to continue supporting the refurbishment of the whole space:
• Place stage curtains throughout the space
• Put the platform on the floor
• Improve the technical adaptation

When a Space becomes familiar, you can call it a Place (Tuan Yi-Fu)

We have already turned the first spotlight on: 12,000 euros! However, we must turn them all on! This channel will be open until December 10. Donate!

  • Plàudite Teatre: at school, on stage, in the street

    Plàudite Teatre is an organisation that promotes personal and community development through the participation and creation in performing arts rooted in the territory. We consider the Performing Arts, Community and Social Theatre as a tool for developing artistic sensitivity, inclusion, social cohesion and as a driver of values. Every year, the organization reaches out to more than 13,000 people and work on a daily basis with highly complex groups based on intersectional reasons: families in poverty, young people at risk of early school dropout, migrant women and survivors of violence, elderly people in situations of unwanted loneliness.

  • Culture against inequalities: Shedding the spotlight.

    Access to culture and artistic practice is a fundamental right of individuals and is necessary for their development. It is one of the rights included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in its Article 27: “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits”. Over these 25 years, we have understood that Culture and Arts are tools for social transformation and have a strongly positive impact on people’s health and well-being. The theatre helps to be more aware of one’s own abilities, helps to increase self-esteem, to relate better with others and, with the environment, to empower oneself, to envisage a possible and diverse future.

  • Why lend a hand to raise the curtain?

    L’Hospitalet has an early school dropout rate of over 40%, and young women without post-compulsory education are the most vulnerable and invisible. With you, we can assist the young women to overcome the psychosocial obstacles that prevent them from continuing their education until they finish high school, stimulate their critical thinking that equips them with self-empowerment tools to break cycles of dependency, and transform social and family paradigms. Help us shed the spotlight to illuminate their future!

  • What will we do immediately with the collected funds?

    With the 12,000€ obtained, we can:
    • Put stage lighting (spotlights) throughout the space
    • Hang stage curtains in half of the space
    • Put sound-absorbing panels

    With more funds, you will help us to:
    • Han stage curtains throughout the whole space
    • Lay the platform on the floor

    Once the campaign is over, the Coop57 Foundation will allocate the resources to cover the following objectives:
    • the refurbishment of the 260 m2 industrial premises as a stage space: lights and spotlights, side curtains, sound absorbing panels, and the platform;
    • to offer an equipped space open to the community, for intercultural and intergenerational interaction to foster social and community cohesion through artistic practice;
    • to develop, as of September 2023, the #ACTFEM project against early school dropout for young women at risk.

  • L’H: the densest city in Europe

    L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, has neighbourhoods inhabited by 53,000 people per km², of 160 different nationalities where more than 100 languages are spoken. Here, the inequalities abound, which is why we want to break down barriers and break down walls to create a space for transformative performing arts.
